What Options Do I Have for Foldable Cell Phones?

Recent screen technological advancements have given rise to an increasing number of foldable cell phones. While foldable phones still account for a minority of models, there are now several options to choose from if this is a prioritized feature for you. Here are some of the best foldable cell phones.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3

The standard for foldable cell phones was set by the 2020 Galax Z Fold 2, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 only builds on that initial bar.

Samsung’s newest Galaxy Z Fold has a faster refresh rate and higher display resolution than its predecessor, which means the screen is even sharper yet still flexes. It also supports the S Pen and is water-resistance (two much-requested features), and has a trio of cameras.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 received a $200 price reduction compared to last year’s prices, but base versions still start out at $1,499.99. This is a clear frontrunner if performance is more important than price. Otherwise, there are more budget-friendly options that are still capable.

(Prices can vary depending on what sales/discounts are currently available.)

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3

Samsung’s own more affordable alternative is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, which starts at $899.99.

In exchange for saving $500, you’ll have to give up S pen support, the telephoto camera and some memory. You can purchase a nice camera and flash drive for less, though, and the phone features the same Snapdragon 888 processor. The screen is also slightly larger than the model’s Galaxy Z Flip 2 predecessor.

Motorola Razr (2020)

The Motorola Razr has come a long way since the product line’s early days of the 2000s, and it’s not always been in a good direction. The company’s first foldable phone was prone to breaking and made even Apple’s battery life seem impressive.

The Motorola Razr (2020) boasts second-generation improvements that make it more reliable, boost performance and include 5G compatibility. It can uniquely be used when folded closed, as well.

The $999.99 price tag of the Motorola Razr makes it expensive compared to more powerful phones, but it’s nonetheless a widely available option.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 is still a contender with today’s newer models, often outperforming brand-new phones from other companies. Additionally, Samsung has released multiple software updates over the past two years that continue to better usability.

In particular, Samsung has released several updates that make split-screen use more enjoyable. This came on the back of consumer research that showed people use the phone for multitasking and watching videos much more often than they do with non-folding phones.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 also has excellent internals, 5G support and an overall beautiful design. It weighs a little more than the Galaxy Z Fold 3, but you’re unlikely to notice unless you head on a backpacking adventure. The loss of S Pen support and water-resistance are much more likely to be regretted, but it’s hard to argue with the $850.00 price that many retailers charge.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G

If you want foldable cell phone technology at the most affordable price, turn to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G. Some other models might technically be available slightly less, but their technical specs are usually much lower.

You’ll get a speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus processor, sufficient memory and three good cameras with the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. There isn’t any dust or water resistance, but you might not mind considering the typical low ~$425.00 price.
