Everything You Need to Know About iOS 15

Apple released iOS 15 on June 7, 2021, and the updates continues to roll out. Whether you’ve been using the update since June last year or will have access to it imminently, there are undoubtedly still new things to discover. Here’s everything you should know about iOS 15.

Compatible iPhone Models

Most Apple iPhones that continue to be used have access to iOS 15. All new iPhone 13s ship with the operating system, and it’s also compatible with:

  • iPhone 12 series
  • iPhone 11 series
  • iPhone X series
  • iPhone 8 series
  • iPhone 7 series
  • iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE (all generations)

The seventh-generation iPad Touch and new iPads also use the update.

While all of these models have access to iOS 15, not all of the models are able to take full advantage of its features. Some of the most impressive new features only work on the more recent, more powerful models.

Update of iOS 15.4

The latest rendition of iOS 15 is the iOS 15.4 update, which was released the week of March 14, 2022. This update came with several highly anticipated additions:

  • Tap To Pay functionality supports third-party apps
  • Face ID has a lower-security option that works with facemasks
  • AirTags have additional security features
  • Siri has a fifth voice that’s nonbinary

Notable iOS 15 Features

Stricter Security

In Apple’s continued crusade for privacy, iOS 15 brings more controls that all you to limit what data is collected. Some of these controls include:

  • Privacy Reports that make it easy to check how different apps are using your data
  • Mail allows you to block pixel tracking and hide your IP address
  • Siri can still have speech recognition disabled (it comes enabled)

Of course, Apple has also limited what data can be collected across all its devices and platforms. The company generally offers details parental controls as well.

3D Apple Maps

Apple Maps now has 3D renderings for an increasing number of urban locations, and it’s capable of providing directions based on the renderings when they’re available. More information about road colorings, commercial centers, and labels is also shown, and a night mode makes it easier to navigate at night.

In select locations, the phone’s camera can be used to locate where you are within a city. Take a picture of a landmark, and the platform might recognize it through one of the 3D renderings and GPS locating.

Time-Accurate Weather Maps

Apple has owned Dark Sky for slightly more than a year, and the company’s weather features are slowly being incorporated into the iPhone’s Weather app. One of the first changes is maps that look different depending on what time of day it currently is.

Digital Driver’s License

The Apple Wallet made a major expansion, by allowing you to store a digital copy of your driver’s license. The feature is currently limited to Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah, but more states will likely adopt the practice in the future.

Photo & Music Integration

Photo Memories continue to become more robust, now integrating Apple Music songs. The artificial intelligence will create a slideshow of related photos/videos, and set the slideshow to one of your songs.
