What to Know About the Samsung S22

The Samsung Galaxy S22 will officially debut on February 9, but much about the phone is already known, leaked, or rumored. Here’s what to expect when the Samsung S22 is shown for the first time.

Official Release Date (Known)

Samsung will officially showcase the Galaxy S22 at the company’s Galaxy Unpacked Event. The event is scheduled for February 9, at 9:00 a.m. EST / 3:00 p.m. GMT.

While Samsung has confirmed the event and Galaxy S22 release, the company has not yet said when the phone will be made available for purchase. It’s expected to be available sometime during the second half of February.

Product Lineup (Known)

The full Galaxy S22 model lineup will consist of three models: the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22 Plus and Galaxy S22 Ultra. The first two models are expected to be roughly similar, while the Ultra will probably have more significant differences. All three of these models will replace their corresponding counterparts in the Galaxy S21 lineup.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is also replacing the Samsung Note 21, which was canceled late last year. This will make the Galaxy S22 Ultra the company’s flagship phone. It also could explain some of the features that will be found only on this Galaxy S22 model (see display).

Rumors suggest that the Galaxy S22 Ultra might be in short supply initially, likely due to supply chain issues during production.

Design and Display (Leaked)

The Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus will largely mirror their predecessors in form. Their colors will also generally pattern those of the previous generation, although the former blue is probably being switched out for green.

Displays on these models are also expected to feature only minor changes, if any. Screen sizes should respectively measure 6.06 and 6.55 inches, and both screens will have FHD+.

The premiums Galaxy S22 Ultra will have a larger screen — possibly 6.81 inches — and QHD+. A leak shows this model as having a more angular design, suggestive of the Note 21. The design could have been initially developed for the Note 21 before that models was canceled, or it might just be inspired by the Note 21.

Main, Wide Angle and Telephoto Cameras (Rumored)

Camera specs for the Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 plus are fairly certain. These phones are rumored to come with a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide and a 12MP telephoto.

Specs for the Galaxy S22 Ultra are less clear, although the phone may come with a 108MP main camera, 12MP ultra-wide, and two 10MP telephotos. The 50MP main camera on the lower two models is among the best in the industry — 108MP would dwarf any other phone camera.

Power Specs (Rumored)

Expect Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processors on all of the Samsung Galaxy S22 models. The ram and storage could be the same as what’s on the Galaxy S21 models, but that’s only a guess. One unverified report claims the S22 Ultra will have upwards of 1TB of storage.

Price Points (Leaked)

Leaks hint at price points that are $100 higher than the Samsung Galaxy S21 lineup. The increase is on par with how much Apple is expected to raise prices on its higher-end iPhones. For reference, the Galaxy S21 starts at $799.
